Staying in control

GAMSTOP and self-exclusion

Blocking every licensed gambling site at once, and what else helps when you want a break.

What it is

One sign-up, every licensed site

GAMSTOP (opens in a new tab) is a free national self-exclusion scheme. Register once and every online operator licensed in Great Britain must stop you opening accounts or gambling with them, for six months, one year or five years.

An exclusion cannot be lifted early. When the period ends it stays in place until you ask for it to be removed.

Beyond

Other blocks worth adding

  • Bank gambling blocks. Many UK banks and card providers let you block gambling payments from the app.
  • Blocking software on phones and computers, which also covers sites not licensed in Great Britain.
  • Venue schemes. Separate schemes cover betting shops and land-based casinos.
  • Operator self-exclusion with a single brand, which should cover its sister brands on the same licence.

Support

Talking it through

Self-exclusion works best alongside support. GamCare answers the National Gambling Helpline on 0808 8020 133, and Gambling Therapy (opens in a new tab) offers online groups. More help on our safer gambling page.
