Wagering and the 10× cap

What a wagering requirement asks of you, and the limit that has applied since January 2026.

Meaning

What wagering means

A casino bonus is money you cannot withdraw straight away. The wagering requirement says how much you must stake before you can: a £20 bonus with 10× wagering needs £200 of bets. Bets are counted, not results, so the requirement stays the same whether those bets go well or badly.

Wagering is usually set on the bonus amount. Older offers sometimes set it on the deposit and the bonus together, which doubled the sum; read which one applies.

The rule

The 10× cap

Since 19 January 2026, operators licensed by the Gambling Commission may not set a wagering requirement above 10 times the bonus. The same change ended mixed-product promotions, such as a casino bonus that unlocks only after a sports bet: an offer now has to stay within one product.

Every casino offer on Slate Casino Review fits the cap. An offer that does not, we do not list.

Small print

The conditions that sit around the multiple

  • Game weighting. Slots often count 100%; table and live games may count 10% or nothing, so the same requirement takes far more play.
  • Time limit. Bonus funds expire, often within 7 to 30 days, and anything left goes with them.
  • Maximum stake. Many offers cap each bet while a bonus is active.
  • Cap on withdrawals. Some offers limit how much of what the bonus produces you may take out.
  • Payment exclusions. Some deposit methods do not qualify for the offer at all.

Do the sum

Work it out before you opt in

If it comes in, a £10 free bet at 3.00 returns £20.00.

The same stake in cash would return £30.00. The £10.00 difference is the free bet itself, which is not returned.

A £50 bonus at 10× needs £500.00 of bets before it can be withdrawn.

On a game that counts at 50%, that becomes £1,000.00 of play. The legal limit in Great Britain is 10×.

These are sums, not advice. Over time, gambling costs more than it returns: treat any stake as money spent on entertainment.
